OK this one is not for the BBQ.  At least I have not figured out how to broil with my smoker but this is a must try recipe.  Our friend Alexandre, who is born and raised in France, shared this French secret with us. Just try it!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Stick Real Butter
  • 3 Tablespoons Flour
  • 1 Cup Whole Milk
  • 8 Slices Good Quality Slice Ham (We use only Boars Head Brand)
  • 8 Slice White Bread
  • 4 to 8 Ounces Shreded Gruyere Cheese

Directions:

  • Butter one side of each slice of bread (use 1/2 stick of butter for all 8 slices of bread).
  • Place the Ham on the buttered side of the bread and place another piece on top (butter side down).
  • Make all 4 sandwiches.
  • In a pan, melt the remaining butter (should be 1/2 stick).
  • Slowly add the flour to make a rue (keep stirring and don't let it brown).
  • Fold in the milk slowly (keep stirring).
  • Cook on low heat for about 5 to 10 minutes or until the (Bechmel Sauce) sauce becomes thick.
  • Spread a thin layer of sauce on the top of each sandwich.
  • Spread the grated Gruyere cheese on top of sauce.
  • Broil 2 sandwiches at a time for about 4 minutes or until desired color.
